Volvo Car Australia has at last installed a new managing director, this week appointing company veteran and inaugural Polestar boss Nick Connor to the role.
Connor replaces Kevin McCann, who resigned from the company in November, and McCann’s temporary replacement as acting managing director, Stephen Connor (no relation).
McCann oversaw the introduction of Volvo’s more luxurious new offerings, having been appointed just after the unveiling of the new XC90 SUV. Since then, Volvo has also introduced the new S90, V90 CC, V60 and XC60. The new XC40 will launch in May, and the new S60 has been spied online.
With Nick Connor’s appointment, Stephen Connor becomes Sales and Marketing Director for Volvo Car Australia.
British-born Nick Connor was the first CEO of Polestar, after it was spun off to become a new electric-only performance brand. He was replaced by Volvo design chief Thomas Ingenlath in June last year.
Before Polestar, Connor held executive roles with Volvo in Europe, including Managing Director for Volvo UK – the company’s fourth-largest market globally – where he led a 60 per cent sales increase.
Connor’s sales success in the UK will be welcome for the local arm, which ended 2017 with 4681 sales – down nearly 21 per cent on the year before. This year may not bring much more, with the brand’s 424 sales in February marking an increase of just nine units over February last year.
The new XC60 has brought some improvement since launching in November, although its 342 sales year-to-date in 2018 are not exactly dwarfing the 288 examples of the old model moved over the same period in 2017.
Connor will likely pour more resources into moving that model, along with the compact new XC40 that makes its Australian debut in May.
“I look forward to working closely with our dealer network to capitalise on these fantastic new products and on the recognition to deliver a greater share of the luxury new car market in Australia,” Connor says.
