VinFast Lux A2.0, Lux SA2.0 debut with BMW platforms, tech

The VinFast Lux A2.0 sedan and Lux SA2.0 crossover have made their in-the-flesh debuts at the 2018 Paris motor show.

Under the bonnet, the two cars are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder which, according to Autocar and other sources, is sourced from BMW.

The 2.0-litre turbo is available in 130kW and 170kW forms, neither of which feature BMW’s Valvetronic technology. Both versions are available in the sedan, but only the more powerful variant is available in the heavier crossover.

The BMW connection stretches even further, because the two cars use superseded platforms from the Bavarian automaker.

The A2.0 sedan is based on the previous-generation 5 Series platform, while the SA2.0 uses the old X5 as its base. Both cars come with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic as standard, while the SA2.0 also available in all-wheel drive.

VinFast says it has taken steps to future proof the platforms, as well as improve side impact and pedestrian protection. While VinFast is initially targeting its home market, these two cars are engineered to be compliant with European regulations.
