The rupee started off well against the dollar on Thursday with a gain of 15 paise at 63.94, riding on a global weakness of the US unit.
Banks and exporters increasingly offloaded the American currency.
The rupee settled 23 paise up at 64.09 against the dollar in the previous trading session.
Softness of the US dollar against major currencies fed the rupee upmove.
Domestic stocks opened in the green on Thursday, in line with global cues. The BSE Sensex was trading 142 points, or 0.42 per cent, up at 34,298 at around 9.30 am (IST). The NSE Nifty climbed 42.70 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 10,543.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 728.71 crore on Wednesday, as per provisional data. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) too net sold equities of Rs 152.39 crore.
“USD-INR is expected to appreciate in the coming session,” said Angel Broking.
