LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Looks like Papa John’s took another public step toward distancing itself from its founder John Schnatter with its latest commercial.
The pizza giant’s ad features several franchise owners, company directors and other employees speaking on camera – as well as getting right to the point as to why they’re on the screen and not Schnatter.
“You’ve heard one voice of Papa John’s for a long time,” says Alaura, a franchisee from Detroit.
In the next frame, Zafira, a local store marketing manager for Papa John’s, says “it’s time you heard from all of us.”
In the one-minute ad, a diverse group of employees share their thoughts on working for Papa John’s and the experiences that make it fun for them. It ends with several names being rotated behind “Papa” in the trademark logo, such as “Papa Kiersten’s,” “Papa Dougie’s,” “Papa Daniel’s” and “Papa Brant’s.”
The commercial is the latest move in the aftermath of Schnatter’s use of the N-word during a media training session in May. Since then, the company and its founder have feuded publicly, with Schnatter resigning as the chairman of Papa John’s and also taking legal action against the company.
Schnatter has continued in his attempts to prove he should be with the company he founded, saying it “performs better” with him there, while Papa John’s board has asked him to tone it down. He’s also reached out to employees within the company in a letter, which was rejected by executives.
A shorter version of the commercial will begin airing in the fall, according to CNN.
