British motorists are more likely to opt for hybrid than diesel when they buy their next car, according to the results of a survey compiled by the National Franchised Dealer Association (NFDA).

Of the 1000 respondents in the study, of which 490 were male and 510 were female, just 12% said they were considering buying a diesel car for their next vehicle purchase. Not only is this a tiny proportion for a fuel type that once accounted for nearly half of all new car sales, it’s also a marked decrease on the 23% of respondants opting for diesel in an Autocar survey compiled just one year ago.

This means that, according to the NFDA’s survey, diesel ranks behind hybrid power, which was the choice for 13% of respondents.

Although relatively small in scale, the study illustrates the extent of consumers’ loss of confidence in diesel. Sales for black-pump vehicles have tumbled in recent months and now account for 33.5% of the market, down from a 44% share last year.

The results of the survey suggest that the chances of sales recovering any time soon are low. The UK Government’s recent diesel tax hike will no doubt present another barrier to diesel’s recovery.

Petrol ranks top in the NFDA study, with 41% of respondents saying they’d choose a car of this fuel type for their next vehicle purchase. However, the second most popular answer is ‘don’t know’, backing suggestion that the UK’s recent new car sales downturn has been in part triggered by a general fall in consumer confidence.

The survey shows that most consumers are still some way off opting for a plug-in electrified car as their next purchase. Plug-in hybrid was chosen by just 2% of participants.

Pure electric was the top choice for only 1%. In fact, 59% of respondents ranked purchase cost as a main reason for not opting for a pure electric vehicle, while battery range and access to charging infrastructure were highlighted as a concern for 53% and 52% of participants respectively.

The car makers may drag their feet a bit longer but the market from them is there. Thanks primarily to the US catching Volkswagen with its pants down, people have increasingly become aware of the damage that they have duped to buy into. No more. Like you, some carmakers have an agenda, dismissing diesel engines: they are poisonous, they have maintenance high costs associated, they have clogging particle filters, they will be banned… know what? Petrol engines need particulate filters too, maintenance isn`t free on them, they empoison also and will be banned from market too!

Guess what? That Toyota hybrid will be banned because it relies on a Petrol engine mated to a weak battery!

Before we can rely-only on Battery-Electric and Hydrogen-Battery vehicles, we need diesel engines, petrol engines, engines running Natural Gas and some more powering cars and machines. If, and if Toyota-like system will gain traction, people will be better off opting for those PHV that all of you Toyota fanboys dismiss: many people using them can do their daily errands purely running on electric. Yes they needs access to a mains plug at home and office, many have that!

PHV hybrids outsell all Toyota-Lexus hybrids in UK alone, go get a consolation-prize with that survey.

talking to people with petrol hybrids like Lexus etc they are not  very economical the lexus was 27mpg so way worse than diesel,they also carry aboput 100 200 or 300 kgs extra weight ,after the few miles of electric you are very uneconomical and high co2 output also a lot mor expensive.

I’m not convinced by  your claims.. i have  an IS300H and I should know..There is somethign seriously wrong with you or there is somethgn seriously with with the car you drove and needs be looked at.

I;’m getting about 40s minimum and donlt drive like a granny/grandad..!

Before government decided to boost diesel sales with tax incentives, diesel cars accounted for around 15% of the UK market. The rapid rise of SUVs initially made diesel more attractive too. 

It is now returning to its ‘natural’ share of the market – and about time too.
