Great Wall has launched a single-cab-chassis version of the Steed, priced at a bargain basement $17,990 before on-roads, or $18,990 drive-away if you have an ABN.

It’s been a while in the making, with the Steed dual-cab launching under factory distributorship in September 2016, priced between $24,990 and $26,990. A base version has long been necessary.

The ute you see here is now the cheapest in Australia, $7000 cheaper than an equivalent Toyota HiLux WorkMate diesel.

The Steed cab-chassis comes in 4×2 and 4×4 guise, the latter priced $2000 higher than the 4×2.

Both use a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine making 110kW/310Nm, matched to a six-speed manual gearbox only.

The fuel tank is 70L and claimed fuel use is 8.2-8.6L/100km. You get it disc brakes all-round, front double-wishbone suspension and rear leafs. The wheels are 16-inch alloys on 235/70 R16 rubber.

Great Wall claims a very handy 1198kg payload, 1700kg braked-trailer tow rating, and has fitted an Australian-made tray measuring 2400mm by 1777mm.

Standard features include dual airbags, ABS brakes, Bosch ESP stability control, hill hold control, tyre pressure monitoring. You also get fabric seats, air-conditioning and an auto-dimming rear vision mirror. Frills? Few.

“Since we re-launched the Steed nameplate in 2016, we have received strong demand from dealers and customers for the return of the single cab version,” said Great Wall Motors Australia chief marketing officer, Tim Smith.

“With a mix of toughness, reliability and value for money, the single cab has always been a popular member of the Great Wall family. At its peak in 2012, the single cab version accounted for 55 per cent of all Great Wall utility sales,” he said.

Under its former independent distributor Ateco, Great Wall sold about 40,000 utes and SUVs (the latter is now the province of Haval) over a short tenure, peaking at more than 11,000 units in the aforementioned year of 2012.

The Steed Single Cab is now available in Great Wall dealerships around Australia and comes with a three-year, 100,000 kilometre warranty, three-years’ roadside assist and three years’ service price menu.
