The upcoming BMW X7 flagship SUV isn’t even on the market yet, but reports from overseas are already claiming a high-performance M version could be in the works.
According to BMW Blog, “various sources” from Munich indicate BMW is considering an X7 M or X7 M Performance to duke it out with high-powered rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG GLS63, Bentley Bentayga, and Audi SQ7.
It’s believed the success of the smaller X5 M and X6 M models have prompted the Bavarian marque to consider an M option for buyers of its largest X model, despite potential criticism that such a large vehicle doesn’t fit the values of the M brand.
While capacity and configuration of the powertrain aren’t mentioned, the publication believes a power output in the vicinity of 600hp (447kW) is likely – 6kW more than the new M5, though the Competition version bumps that figure up to 460kW.
Should that output be accurate, expect the X7 M to be powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, as per the M5 and 8 Series M850i. The current AMG GLS63, by comparison, makes 430kW and 760Nm from its 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8.
