A development prototype believed to be the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been snapped this week, further fuelling rumours the German performance specialist is working on a new flagship model.
Despite looking very much like an AMG GT R wrapped in a swirly black-and-white disguise, this prototype has one distinguishing feature – a different exhaust system with quad pipes sticking out in a Lexus-like stacked design. Normally, the GT R breathes through a large central outlet.
Given the very rough arrangement, we’d suggest this is a very early prototype testing a revised engine and exhaust setup. This likely means that the GT Black Series – or ‘Clubsport’ as some publications have speculated – will get an even more powerful engine.
Currently, the AMG GT R makes 430kW and 700Nm from its 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8. It’s likely a ‘Black Series’ or ‘Clubsport’ version will get the full-fat 450kW/850Nm tune seen in the AMG E63 S sedan.
It’s unclear whether the GT will get 4Matic+ performance all-wheel drive to handle the extra power and torque, we’ll have to wait for an official announcement to confirm those details.
